EFFECTS OF THE NATIONAL DEBT

The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) reports that by the end of 2018, the U.S. National Debt (publicly held) will total $16 trillion, which is 78 percent of our GDP (or gross domestic product, the total of what our nation produces in goods and services in a year). That will increase to $29 trillion by 2028, or 96 percent of our GDP. That Debt is expected to total more than 150 percent of our GDP within 20 years.

Entitlement programs such as Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security are the major drivers of that growing debt. Meanwhile, more and more Americans are retiring without sufficient savings every year, increasing the future need for government assistance. This is an unstainable path. We offer help from professional financial advisors on ways families can prepare for these and other fiscal challenges. We also provide resources to churches on wise ways to help people in need, such as instructional materials from The Chalmers Center.
